Dome Car Magic: A History of Railroad Dome Cars
Dome Car Magic chronicles the history of those glamorous railroad sightseeing cars, from Burlington's 1945 Silver Dome to full-length domes operating in Canada and Alaska today. At their peak in the 1950s, dome cars could be found on many of North America's most famous long-distance passenger trains. Archival film footage shows many of these, including the Empire Builder, Super Chief, North Coast Limited, Daylight, Capitol Limited, Denver Zephyr, City of Los Angeles, Canadian - and perhaps the most famous of all, the California Zephyr. Interviews with seasoned travelers and spectacular images of present-day dome cars on a variety of dinner and cruise trains round out the show. Hosted by Michael Gross.

    Story of India[#101H]
    Beginnings
Michael Wood's fascinating journey through the history of the Indian subcontinent chronicles the incredible richness and diversity of its peoples, cultures and landscapes; outlines the originality and continuing relevance of its ideas; and relates some of the most momentous and moving events in world history. Beginning with the first human migrations out of Africa, using DNA and climate science, ancient manuscripts and oral tales, Wood takes viewers from the tropical backwaters of South India to lost ancient cities in Pakistan - the scene of India's first civilization. He travels on to Turkmenistan in Central Asia, where dramatic new archaeological discoveries cast fresh light on India's deep past. Finally, Wood travels to the vibrant cities of the Ganges plain, where India's ancient myths and histories still intertwine.

    Story of India[#102H]
    The Power of Ideas
Michael Wood's epic series moves into the revolutionary years after 500 BC - the Age of the Buddha. Traveling by road and rail between the ancient cities of the Ganges plain, he tells the tale of the young prince who gave up the good life and became the Buddha: "India's first and greatest protester." Then, moving by army convoy through Northern Iraq and down the Khyber Pass into Pakistan, Wood shows how Alexander the Great's invasion changed the course of India's history and inspired her first empire. He visits India's earliest capital, Patna, and using archaeology, legend and "India's Rosetta stone," explains how the ideas of the Buddha were turned into political reality by the great Indian emperor Ashoka - "one of the most remarkable figures in history" - who sowed the seeds of "history's most dangerous idea."

Emmy keeps on trying, and even though she's frustrated, she gradually improves. When they reach the bridge, the gang encourages a nervous Emmy to do her best, and everyone cartwheels successfully enough to cross the bridge and deliver the soup to a grateful Fernando. On the way back, everyone is surprised to learn that Trumpy is sad because he can't do a cartwheel himself and hoped to learn by watching everybody else pay the "toll." The gang, including Emmy, is happy to help him learn. Educational Objective: Learning a new physical skill with help from friends

The celebrated naturalist's starting point is a piece of amber that he was given as a child and that he was fascinated to discover contained ancient insects buried within it. These remarkable bits of resin serve as a time machine, transporting scientists back 40 million years and yielding some amazing insights into life on Earth at that time. The Old Man and the Storm
Six months after Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, producer June Cross came across 82-year-old Herbert Gettridge working alone on his home in the lower Ninth Ward, a neighborhood devastated when the levees broke in August 2005. Over the next two years, Cross would document the story of the extended Gettridge clan -- an African-American family with deep roots in New Orleans -- as they struggled to rebuild their homes and their lives. Their efforts would be deeply impacted by larger decisions about urban planning, public health and the insurance industry, by the decisions of policymakers about federal funding for rebuilding the Gulf, and state and city plans for dispersing those monies. The moving personal story of Mr. Gettridge and his family reveals the human cost of this tragedy, the continued inadequacies of government's response in the aftermath of Katrina and how race, class, and politics have affected the attempts to rebuild this American city.
